Time Passing

Madeleine had painted her ceiling
black, splashed it with stars
and a waning crescent moon.

We gathered there to exchange
the dreams of who we were
and who we might become,
to share our secret stories,
truth and lies when no-one led
and no-one followed.

A time of extravagance
and wonder, of astronauts
landing on the television,
of incense and unthinking.

Soft sunlight at the window,
silver-morning dewdrops,
the quiet sound in my chest:
all were time passing,
and they played with my emotions,
even though my inner life
was a mystery.

I know now that to have secrets
is a part of having a soul.
No-one is an open book,
and I was no exception.

Soon the others were burned
by the fires of their becoming,
and I was overtaken, left behind,
still a child.

I’ve seen too much,
and learned too little,
everything is incomplete,
forever unfinished,
and I cannot forgive myself
for not seeing my truth,
nor being the one
I might have been.

Perhaps it’s no more
than a simpleton’s belief
—wishfulness and vagaries—
but I allow myself to dream
that there’s goodness somewhere
closer than the moon
and her attendant stars,
that it might be invoked,
that I might find traces of it
within myself.

Coming in 2026, The Origins of Time: Where does time come from? Will my time machine work? What did Einstein get wrong about time? And much more, all with clear, commonsense explanations and diagrams.

Out now, illustrated poetry collection Texture of Silence, a collaboration with Eugen Bacon, and Purpose of Reality, illustrated collections of poetry and stories in two volumes from Meerkat Press.

artwork

Burning Summer Flux (detail x 2 & original) from my Beyond AI Project. Existing textures enhanced by AI’s StableDiffusion with EasyDiffusion run from an AutoIt3 script (ControlNet dominates). Five-hour runtime on an NVidiaGeForce RTX4070 Ti Super graphics card. Evolved by the Visual Evolution Engine, my software that seeks unimagined realms, with cyclic nonlinear desaturation and ultracubism. Art and poetry also on Instagram.
