Simpson has worked as a scientist, mathematician, engineer, and bioengineer, most recently researching epileptic seizure detection and dementia classification in collaboration with staff at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Service of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, and in the School of Biomedical Engineering at Sydney University, where he’s an Affiliate.

He’s published over 210 research papers, mainly in the areas of clinical neurology, industrial weld monitoring, signal processing, arc physics, atomic physics, magnetohydrodynamic power generation, and nuclear fusion. He holds various patents, and awards include the Brother Business Software of the Year Award and the inaugural Australasian Peter Doherty Prize of $100 000 for Innovation, both for WeldPrint, Simpson’s technology to make automotive welds safer.

As well as academic activities, he’s worked as a consultant for Holden, Panasonic, Toshiba, and other companies, and he’s been the driving force behind two start-up companies. Fully-funded invitations include professorships, lectures, and courses (Australia, Brazil, Italy, Japan, UK).

He’s acted as a reviewer for the Australian Research Council, the U.S. National Science Foundation, the Australian Government’s Committee for the Advancement of University Teaching, the Department of Industry, Science and Technology (Australia), and many scientific journals.
