Conditional
And if there were a quiet garden,
cosy and safe, in some forgotten
postcode where time trickles like honey,
and where I might pause and know,
not that my struggles were in vain,
nor that all things are devoid
of meaning, nor that I will be
rewarded in some realm
yet to come, whence no-one
returns,
but merely that I’m allowed
to rest and sigh and come
to understand that I’ve done
what I could within my limitations,
then there would be nothing left
for me to write.
