My poem “When We Were Young” has appeared in issue 9 of Mithila Review, and is freely available on-line with a reading (audio). Mithila is an international speculative arts and culture magazine publishing speculative poetry, fantasy and science fiction from around the world, with issues available on Amazon and elsewhere.

Some background for the piece comes from the logarithmic spiral, which appears all over the place in nature. It was studied by Jacob Bernoulli, who called it spira mirabilis, “the marvelous spiral,” and it allows living creatures to grow while maintaining their forms (self-similarity), for example, nautilus shellfish.

Bernoulli wanted the spiral engraved on his headstone with the Latin phrase Eadem mutata resurgo, “Although changed, I arise the same,” but the stonemason made a mistake and drew the wrong spiral. On the bright side, they spelt his name correctly.
